Thrush: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Thrush: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Thrush is a type of yeast infection that can affect different parts of the body, such as the mouth, throat, or vagina. Symptoms vary depending on the location of the infection but may include itching, burning, and soreness. Thrush can be treated with antifungal medications, which are available both over-the-counter and by prescription.

The most common cause of thrush is a fungus called Candida albicans. This fungus is normally found in the mouth and digestive tract in small numbers, but it can overgrow and cause an infection when the body's natural defences are decreased. Factors that can weaken the immune system and lead to infection include stress, illness, diabetes, use of corticosteroid medications, and pregnancy.

There are several different symptoms of thrush depending on its location. Mouth thrush may cause a white coating on the tongue or inside of the cheeks; soreness or difficulty swallowing; or a metallic taste in the mouth. Throat thrush may cause throat pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or a loss of voice. Vaginal thrush may cause itching, burning, redness and swelling around the vagina; pain during sex or when urinating; thick vaginal discharge that may be white or discoloured; and occasional bleeding after intercourse.

Thrush can be diagnosed by your doctor based on your symptoms. A sample of saliva, mucus from the mouth or throat, or vaginal discharge may be sent to a lab for testing. Treatment with antifungal medication is usually effective within a few days. If you are pregnant, have diabetes or a weakened immune system, your doctor may prescribe a longer course of treatment. It is important to finish all of the medication prescribed even if symptoms disappear sooner than expected as this will help ensure that the infection has been eliminated completely.

Preventing thrush is not always possible but there are some things that you can do to reduce your risk: avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes that traps moisture; eat yogurt or take probiotics supplements to increase levels of healthy bacteria in the gut; avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals on delicate skin areas; and keep skin dry and clean by using talcum powder if necessary.

Thrush: What you need to know

Thrush (Candida albicans) is a yeast infection caused by the overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida. This fungus is found naturally in the vagina, rectum, and mouth. It's usually kept in check by other bacteria and fungi. But sometimes, the balance of microbes can change, leading to an overgrowth of candida.

When this happens, you may notice symptoms like itching, burning, redness, or discharge. Thrush can also cause pain during sex and make it difficult to urinate. If you think you have thrush, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

There are many treatment options for thrush. Your doctor may prescribe antifungal medications in the form of pills, creams, or suppositories. You may also need to change some of your habits and hygiene practices to help prevent a recurrence of thrush.

Here are some things you can do to help prevent thrush:

· Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes or underwear that doesn't allow your skin to breathe · Change out of wet clothes quickly · Stay dry down there by using a towel after bathing or swimming · Wipe from front to back after using the bathroom · Use gentle soap when cleaning yourself (avoid strong scents) · Avoid douching
